3D projection mapping for the Museums of Hrvatsko Zagorje – Museum of the Peasant Revolts

For marking the anniversary of the peasant revolt, the Museums of Hrvatsko zagorje decided to revive the monument to the Peasant Revolt and Matija Gubec and to show the event which left a big mark in Croatian history, in multimedia. In order to give the monument an additional dimension in the 21st century, a completely new installation of the 3D mapping projection system was performed.

Matija Gubec was one of the greatest national heroes, the leader of the Peasant Revolt in this part of Europe and one of the most popular figures in Croatian history. His heroism was an inspiration to many artists, therefore, the multimedia project of the Museum of Peasant Revolts was formed. The historical theme is presented with the fight against oppression, exploitation, and the fight for a better tomorrow, and a special detail is given to the ‘revival’ of individual characters on the monument who move around it in a explosion of color and virtual movement.

Background

In order to improve the cultural identity and mark the memory of the historical event of the Peasant Revolt, the Museums of Hrvatsko zagorje decided to introduce a new dimension of presenting the monument to the Peasant Revolt and Matija Gubec through 3D projection of multimedia content. Our contribution to this project was the creation and installation of a projector system for displaying 3D video content.

Challenge

The main challenges in this project were finding the optimal distance of the projectors from the monument, outdoor installation as a permanent installation (resistant to weather conditions and vandalism), cable infrastructure, synchronization of the projection of the two systems, and fine tuning to adapt to the relief surface.

Our approach

The main topic was setting up a 3D mapping projector system that projects the content on the composition of the sculpture by Matija Gubec and side reliefs, the left of which shows the battle of Stubica, and the right depicts everyday life of the 16th century.

Solutions

Two PandoPad 3D projector systems were delivered on fixed free-standing poles located at a considerable distance from the monument at the beginning of the grass surface. The housings of the projector system are made of quality materials resistant to microclimatic conditions.
