Interactive tablet application for Brijuni National Park

National park Brijuni presented the CITES application for tablet devices to complement the exhibition of objects made according to the model of endangered animal species in the lobby of the Natural History Museum of the Brijuni National Park. The application will inform visitors about the implementation and objectives of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Animals and Plants.

CITES is other name for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora presented in 1973 in Washington. Every year, hundreds of millions of plants and animals are taken from the wild and sold as pets, various decorations, fashion accessories and medicines. The purpose of this international agreement is to regulate and control international trade in wild species, and to ensure that it does not endanger the survival of these species in nature.

Background

Brijuni National Park has decided to add a multimedia component to the exhibition showcase with objects made from endangered species of plants and animals. This is the first showcase of its kind in Croatia where animals that once arrived at the Brijuni Zoo and safari park, or the offspring of these animals born on the Brijuni Islands, were stuffed after death. This is how the collection of preparations was created, which was arranged in the Natural History Museum of the Brijuni National Park a quarter of a century ago.

Challenge

It is necessary to draw attention to the presence of illegal trade in endangered plant and animal species in a modern and interactive way and to invite visitors to raise awareness and prevent consequences.

Our approach

Data on endangered plant and animal species were collected and presented with pictures and descriptions within the application as part of the CITES exhibition. The application also shows useful information about the Convention on International Trade, its activities, and its significance for Croatia.

Solutions

An Android application installed on tablets has been delivered. It is available to all visitors in the lobby of the Natural History Museum on the island of Veliki Brijun.
