Digital content production and modeling for Petrapilosa castle

Petrapilosa castle, a thousand year old medieval castle located on a cliff above the valley of the river Bračana, has been reconstructed and is open to the general public. Reconstruction of the castle was carried out as part of the EU project KulTERRA - Revitalization of the Istrian castles Morosini-Grimani and Petrapilosa. As part of the project's innovative approach and with the help of collected and produced digital content about its history, the castle has become richer for a new multimedia presentation.

Throughout history, Petrapilosa was primarily a military fortress in which feudal lords and soldiers were housed. It was abandoned after a great fire 300 years ago and was never rebuilt later. Today, completely adapted for visitors, this castle stands proudly on a high cliff and tells history in a very interesting way. The interesting fact is that the castle is popularly known as a "hairy castle" and a "hairy city", and the reason for the unusual names lies in the dense vegetation that surrounds it, but also "springs" from its walls.

Background

In order to improve the cultural identity and historical heritage, the city of Buzet decided to reconstruct and revitalize the abandoned castle of Petrapilosa as a tourist destination. As part of the revitalization of this extensive project, it was necessary to produce digital content that would tell the story of the old castle.

Challenge

The challenge was to create a unique experience with a number of historical facts and legends, which will be presented through interactive digital content.

Our approach

In the creative part of the project, it was necessary to study historical topics and develop visual content that would be presented through various technologies of multimedia display. The idea was to show the Petrapilosa castle from all angles of multimedia in the space (from floor projections, wall projections, interactive applications, etc.). For the needs of the project, a 3D model of the castle was produced, as well as high-resolution photographs taken by an aerial drone.

Solutions

The project delivered various types of digital content that include drone shooting, production of 3D castle models, content for floor projections, 3D mapping projection, and production and design of applications and games for interactive screens.
